On Specificity // Production
Performance, text, artist book, video installation realized at PiST///, Istanbul, Turkey, September 26, 2012
Excerpted from PiST///’s press release:
‘On Specificity’ is the third and final part of the ‘Production’ series, a project that the artist started in New York, 2011. She is currently interested in outlining artistic production through the lecture format, writing texts that find form in readings. The series, structured as a sentence, ends with this text, which functions as an adverb—not essential for the subject and the verb, yet critical in defining how the object does what it does. The first in the series, On/For Production, traces production by looking at the permeability of self- enclosure. The second text, Underproduction, is a confession and proclamation of its very title. And the third, commissioned by PiST///, looks for artistic production in the potentialities of language. The final part of Ünsal’s performance series is realized at PiST/// in a workshop format, open to audience participation on September 25th, 2012, Tuesday, in the afternoon, and on September 26th, 2012, Wednesday, during the day. The text is translated from English to Turkish and Ünsal, who does translations for various art institutions, finalizes the Turkish translation of the work that has evolved through the participation, commentary, and criticisms of the workshop participants. The texts included in the ‘Production’ series is distributed during the performance as limited edition artist books and the performance will hopefully continue to exist on kitchen tables (and maybe bathrooms).
