One Work

One Work, 2014. Neon, dimensions variable. Installation view from Double at Kıraathane, Istanbul, March 2019.

The work plays on the word for collaboration in Turkish. “İşbirliği” can be read in two parts as “iş birliği”, which translates as the oneness or unity of work. Putting the “oneness” [birliği] between parentheses, the word for “work” [iş] is left outside, referring to the often separated nature of coming together and making art works. The first edition of this work was initially produced for Özge Ersoy, a frequent collaborator and the curator of the artist’s first solo exhibition as payment for Ersoy’s curation of and writing for the exhibition. The work is reproduced in an endless edition, remade upon demand, priced at the cost of the neon.
